Rebel Railroad: The Early Days
-
Origins: In 1961, the Robbins brothers from Blowing Rock, North Carolina, opened a small tourist attraction called Rebel Railroad on the site that would eventually become Dollywood. The park featured a steam train, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and even a saloon.
-
Civil War Theme: Inspired by the centennial of the Civil War, the Rebel Railroad allowed visitors to experience simulated “attacks” by Union soldiers, train robbers, and Native Americans. Confederate defenders ensured the safety of the train and its passengers during these thrilling encounters.
-
Tweetsie Railroad Connection: The park’s design drew inspiration from the Robbins brothers’ first successful theme park, Tweetsie Railroad in Blowing Rock. The Wild West theme resonated with visitors, and the park became a popular stop for families exploring the Smoky Mountains.
Goldrush Junction: A New Era
-
Name Change: In 1964, the park underwent a transformation and was renamed Goldrush Junction. The switch to a Wild West theme aligned it with its sister park, Tweetsie Railroad. Visitors now enjoyed cowboy shows, saloon shootouts, and gold rush adventures.
-
Art Modell’s Ownership: In 1970, Art Modell (also the owner of the Cleveland Browns football team) acquired Goldrush Junction. The park continued to thrive, adding an outdoor theater and the Robert F. Thomas Chapel.
Dollywood Emerges
-
Dolly Parton’s Influence: Fast forward to the late 1980s. Country music legend Dolly Parton stepped in, bringing her star power and vision to the park. She became a co-owner and transformed Goldrush Junction into Dollywood.
-
A Celebration of Appalachia: Dollywood celebrates the life and music of Dolly Parton, the beauty of Appalachia, and the nostalgia of the 1950s. It’s a place where roller coasters and crafts coexist, and where families can enjoy thrilling rides and traditional mountain music.
